Curriculum Innovation in Gifted Education: World Class Learning and Critical Perspectives

Gifted education has historically been a vehicle for curriculum innovations that in many cases were later adopted into general education. Problem-based learning, inquiry models, concept-based curriculum, and differentiation were well-established and tested in gifted education before adoption into general education. Gifted education curriculum included focused efforts to develop creative thinking, critical thinking, and problem-solving long before those become general education features of 21st century learning. Indeed, where it exists, good gifted education curriculum has represented world-class learning, but where does it go from here? This symposium will explore new frontiers of learning design focused on talent development, intellectual character, complex thinking models, and critical theories of equity, justice, and inclusive democracy. The viable future of gifted education in the landscape of 21st century schooling must address critical issues of flourishing and humanity to continue to serve as an innovator in teaching and learning.
Todd Kettler, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Educational Psychology in the School of Education at Baylor University, and co-editor of the Journal of Advanced Academics. His primary areas of research and scholarship include learning designs for developing exceptional talent, critical and creative thinking, and equitable access to world-class learning opportunity.
His book Modern Curriculum for Gifted and Advanced Academic Students (Prufrock, 2016) won the Legacy Awad for the Best Scholarly Book in Gifted Education, and his newest book on creative pedagogy, Developing Creativity in the Classroom: Learning and Innovation for 21st Century Schools was released in the fall of 2018 (Prufrock).
He has served for the last three years as the Chairperson of the Commissioners Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented Education in Texas, and he is currently the Chair-Elect of the National Association for Gifted Children’s Conceptual Foundation Network.
